Question:

Freight Shipping vs. U-Haul for cross country moves?

I am planning a cross country move soon, and I have enough stuff to maybe fill up the smallest (10ft) U-haul truck, maybe even a little less. Has anyone freight shipped a similar amount say though UPS or some other freight company that could maybe provide a comparison of costs between the two methods? My logic says:

Cross country U-haul rental is already 900.00 bucks, not including the car tower and gas at 4.00 dollars a gallon, plus two motel stays. = Way more expensive than...

Freight Shipping half a "room" worth of boxes cross country and driving my small 4 cylinder car which gets 28-30mpg to my destination.

Any ideas/advice?

  1. im a semi driver for a "united" moving company, im in cleveland tomorrow, then up sault st. marie, then chicago, to multiple stops in kansas, finishing in vegas end of next week, id help if possible. freight charges with ups, depending on weight, could be up to 100$ a ctn, maybe someone like yellow freight or roadway, but their not gonna be much cheaper, with the high cost of fuel, try a repatable moving company and tell them you want to ship ltl (less than truckload). what about a small uhaul trailer?
