Question:

Fremantle verses Geelong 2008 Round 6 Freo lost 9 Seconds, Freo Appealed to the AFL, What is the result of it?

Well, I heard that Fremantle have gone to the AFL about the loss of the 9 seconds in the dying seconds of the game.

Fremantle had a free kick and the Freo player kicked it, the umpire called the ball back for some reason and the clock continued to go down, where it should've stopped at 16 seconds.

Is there any result that the AFL have made yet?

I am eager to find out as I went to the game, and I'd be overjoyed if Freo drew or won due to that lost 9 seconds.

  1. I'm certain it wont change any result in the game.

However I think that it is a good thing that Freo are showing the AFL that they WILL NOT tolerate these little match losing "mistakes" from umpires. There has been funny business going on for a long time and a lot of people are too scared to speak out because of the threat of fines and the likes (James Hirds remarks about Scott McLaren cos him $20 000!)

Now come on everyone, there are now more umpires than ever before, and yes they are human and can make mistakes, but can't you see the pattern here? And I really don't believe that these people are as stupid as they make themselves out to be!

  2. Timekeepers, not umpires!!!!

THE 11 seconds lost in the dying moments of Geelong's one-point win against Fremantle have been attributed to a timekeeper's error. AFL umpires' boss Jeff Gieschen said yesterday the timekeepers, Barry Kember and Don Jensen, had failed to respond to a signal from officiating umpire Dean Margetts.

As the last minute ticked down at Subiaco on Friday night, Geelong midfielder Joel Selwood kicked the ball out of bounds just outside the Cats' defensive 50m arc.

But the wrong Fremantle player kicked the ball in - Ryan Murphy instead of Byron Schammer - and from too far out, so Margetts correctly recalled the kick.

But the timekeepers either didn't see the signal or failed to act on it.

By the time Schammer took the kick, the time had not been put back on the clock, 10-11 seconds had been taken away from Fremantle.

Geelong defender Harry Taylor took a contested mark with seconds left and held the ball until the siren sounded.

While Taylor would have been able to ice the clock for 11 more seconds before kicking long as the siren sounded, Gieschen admitted there had been an error.

"Quite simply when Selwood's kick went out of bounds on the full, it should have been taken 55m from goal, and instead Murphy picked it up 75m from play, and banged it straight back into play," Gieschen told 3AW.

"The timekeepers, who were 150m away from that situation, saw him kick it back into play and they started the clock.

"Through the confusion of Dean Margetts saying it was Schammer's (ball), not Murphy's - not that Margetts was confused - the clock ran through that period."

Gieschen rejected suggestions a 25m penalty would be more appropriate for trivial infractions.

"No, I don't think so. Once we do that coaches and players are prepared to commit to those 25m penalties, realising it's not the ultimate penalty.

"If you run across the mark or grab someone after a mark, it's very clear it's 50m."

Meanwhile, the MCC will study security footage today in the hope of finding a fan who threw a bottle at umpire Ray Chamberlain on Saturday.

Chamberlain had just awarded a goal-line free kick to Adelaide after Carlton defender Jarrad Waite punched the ball into the stands after a Crows goal.

The AFL said yesterday Chamberlain's decision had been correct.

  3. Fremantle aren't appealing the result.

They can lodge their dissatisfaction about the timekeeper but that's it!

Stiff luck - no sympathy to fremantle. To be 39 points up late in the 2nd quarter & then 25 points up at 3/4 time - & lose it - shows what a weak team they are under pressure. They will soon be challenging Collingwood for that dishonour.

    Collingwood = Colliwobbles

    Dockers = Shockers

  4. The Freo player was awarded a kick BUT WRONG PLAYER kicked it so umpie RIGHTFULLY called it back. The resultant kick was marked by Taylor of geelong and games ended.

Time should have stopped but didnt but the AFL will this week sanction time keeper but not change result as it is impossible to say  Freo would have kicked a goal if there was 9 seconds more. that is how it will go but freo DOES risk putting the AFL side with constant complaints......the game was good.......learn from it and win next week.........that is how it should be

NOTE: complaint has been lodged but AFL will not act on it till business week starts, same as all other business.

  5. The guy who doesn't like umpires has got it spot on.

The 'out of bounds-on the full' free kick was originally taken by the wrong player. So the umpire called it back so the right guy (Byron Schammer, i think) could take his kick. This decision was correct.

The 9 seconds lost was due to the timekeeper not stopping the time as soon as the kick was called back.

The will be no difference in the result for reasons already stated.

I heard somewhere that that timekeeper will not be timekeeping in any matches for a few rounds (kinda like a suspension), but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

The result of the Freo-Saints match at Aurora Stadium in Tasmania was changed because Baker kicked the point AFTER the siren sounded (which the umpires didn't hear).

That was the umps fault, the '9 seconds' issue was the timekeepers mistake.

  6. Freo played so well against Geelong and freo deserved to win. i actually stopped cheering the cats on and began cheering for freo which is wierd coz i dont like freo. but i felt so sorry for Pavlich when the ball hit the post.
