Are the french more comfortable searching something online for instance a show, shop, or a service in their area using Arrondissement or Department? I would like to build a drop down database for the following:

Country: France

Province: The 26 regions i.e. Alsace..etc or should this be departments instead?

City: The list of Arrondissement in the region

Please advice if this makes sense. thanks

  1. Makes sense to me.

I should also remark that the scheme you propose seems quite common to French language websites that I've seen.

  2. Yes we're used to it.

A French who lives in Paris, Lyon or Marseilles will search with his arrondissement number.

The other French will search with their département number, not the region.

So in your example instead of using Alsace we would use the 67 or 68 département number for all kind of searchings.
