I'm home schooled and I'm taking French as my language this year. Actually I'll be taking it all four years of High school. (9th grade right now) and I have to say its pretty difficult so I was wandering if anyone has any tips of helping me study and remember everything in this language!?!?! Thanks in advance!

  1. Do you know how to find the Eiffel Tower without speaking French?

    French

Savez-Vois trouver la tour Eiffel sans savior parler francais?

  2. This URL offers a "student personality quiz" then some hints:

If your score was lower than you expected on the student personality quiz, you might need to reconsider your study habits. The following explanations are a guideline for you to follow in order to get the most out of your French studies. Follow the links for related information and resources.

  3. The best way to learn it, is to use it.  Try using French Phrases that you've learned or talk in French to someone else you know who speaks it.

  4. Studying a language from books alone is not going to get you there.  You need a study buddy who is either French and trying to learn English better, or another student trying to learn French.  Then speak French to each other as best you can, stop and look words up if necessary.  Trying to make yourself understood in French is the best way to make the sentence structure, verb tenses and vocabulary stick in your head.  Listening to French speakers will also be very helpful.  There are operas, songs, and movies in French, pick some of these up at your local library or bookstore.

There are also CDs/DVDs designed to teach French (and other languages) -- if they are not in your budget, you may find some in your local library.

  5. There are French cartoons (Asterix is one of my favorites).  Anyway the words are simple and the cartoons help you keep up with the story.

  6. 2 words

    Rosetta Stone

  7. To learn verb conjugations, put the words to a rhythm, like for regular er verb, e, es, e, ons, ez, ent, for vouloir and pouvoir, x x t t ons ez ent, ect.

  8. keep the grammar in mind and DON'T keep your american accent( that what French think of us and our Howdee yal')

  9. Look for patterns in words rather than trying to learn each french word individually e.g. if a word ends in -ism in English, all but a very few such words simply swap the -ism ending for -isme in french e.g. materialism = materialisme, socialism = socialisme (there's about 1600 french words you now know for a start, lol!).

Similarly whenever you come across a french word which contains 'ô' , try just replacing it with an 's' to see if it makes any sense in English e.g. l'hôpital = hospital.

Try Michel Thomas for heaps more such patterns.

You might also want to try looking at 'A Present from France'

(  http://www.apresentfromfrance.com/index....  ). It's a business, run from their home, by a french home schooling family. Anyway they'll give you help from genuine french speakers as well as sending you regular parcels of french goodies: CDs, magazines, books etc

  10. Perhaps the lessons here will help you with your studying.

    They are excellent and FREE.

  11. Watch movies that are French but have english subtitles.  In time, you'll be able to ignore the subtitles.  I use it.  IT's good practice.

  12. hey! im studying french too im also in 9th n im tkaing it @ skool lol something that rly helps me is that i speak spanish english and im learning  italian so a lot of words r similar in different languages so if u know another language tyr 2 find similarities 2 help u remember

  13. For learning verbs, I suggest "501 Verbs".  Best way to learn different tenses of verbs.  No serious French student goes without it!

    Hope this helps!

  14. It is not a problem of remembering, but of retaining and being able to develop an ability. Learning a language is like learning to play tennis: you have to practice continually, otherwise you'll lose it.

Ergo, when you learn a new structure, make as many sentences with it as you can. For every verb, make at least twenty sentences, and use all the words you know (and go for new ones in the dictionary, when you need them).

Furthermore, listen to some French songs on the internet, and look for the lyrics too. The clearest of all voices, to me, is Charles Trenet, but there are also Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel (very understandable!), and Georges Brassens (more complex).

Start with "Ne me quitte pas" by Jacques Brel (type the song in Google to find the lyrics) and watch him singing it:

Look for the other singers and have fun!
