Question:

French!! I've made a stupid mistake :( :( :(?

Just had a GCSE French reading exam yesterday...

It's made up of 2 sections (A is about 4/5 of the paper B is 1/5) for a total of 45 marks.

B is supposedly the more 'difficult' section so you write your answers in English, because you may not know the word in French.

Only at the end did I notice section B was supposed to be in English... I paniced and started trying to change it. But, 1) There wasn't enough space for me to write and 2) My time ran out.

I couldn't believe this happened to me. French is my strongest subject and I had the potential to do really well in it. But now I've messed it up and feel like I've let down everyone...

My French teacher, my Nan (who's been helping me with French for the past 2 years!), my mum and dad and Myself!!!

I feel awful about it. I love French and keep thinking of it. I feel terrible, because I knew all the answers I just wrote them in French and now I'm going to be penalised for a stupid mistake.

  1. Don't feel awful. I'm sure that you will do really well no matter what happened in section B of the exam. It's a honest mistake, but at least you'll always remember it.

Your nan and your parents will understand and they'll know that you tried your hardest.

Most people only get a couple of marks in the English section anyway, so the grade boundaries might vary. Plus you have good marks in the other sections (though you didn't say about writing) so you never know, that A* might be within reach.

  2. yes you made a mistake and you wont get the marks but dont beat yourself up about it.

You wont be the only one this year messing up subjects because they didnt read the question correctly.

Please enjoy the summer and stop worrying about this as you cant change what has happened you can only learn from your mistakes

    Good Luck

  3. The reading paper accounts for 25% of the total mark for the exam, and section B is one fifth of that - that's 5% of the total. You say that you corrected some of the answers - so you lost at the most 5% of the marks which make up your grade. If you did really well on your other papers it is still possible for you to get an A. However, I'm afraid the examiner will not be able to give you credit for answers written in the wrong language. Try not to worry too much - we've all made mistakes like this, and lived through it! Your ability in French is unchanged, and you will be sure not to make the same mistake in the A level, won't you?

  4. My friend did exactly the same thing in her French GCSE! She got Bs in coursework and oral and stuff, and she got a B over all! Don't worry about it! It's just a tiny little bit of the exam! You'll be fine!

  5. Nah sadly you won't get the marks.

    But isn't 35/45 A-B standard anyway?

so say you got got A*, A, A, B - does this not average out to an A? I'm sure youll end up with a high grade as long as you did well on the rest :)

  6. you won't get the marks, but if you've done that well on the other there you may not get an A* but still an A.

you should learn from this mistake!

  7. What you did is very common and happens in other subjects as well.

You won't get the marks I'm afraid.

Students are always told to "READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY"

Students who can't follow instructions don't get sympathy.

I know that is harsh and I do feel for you but some lessons have to be learned the hard way.
