French Open champion Francesca Schiavone out of Wimbledon
Francesca Schiavone has been knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon, losing in three sets to Vera Dushevina on day one.
Schiavone, who was the surprise French Open champion earlier this month, won the first set against her Russian opponent at the All England Club, but Dushevina fought back to take the 6-7, 7-5, 6-1victory.
While the Italian proved unstoppable on clay at Roland Garros, the transition to grass has proved to be a tough one for Schiavone as she struggled with her timing against the world No. 56, who ran away with the final set of the match. While Schiavone managed to save one match point, Dushevina claimed victory over the fifth seed with the second.
Today’s loss follows Schiavone’s unsuccessful Wimbledon warm-up at the Aegon International in Eastbourne last week, where 57th ranked Sorana Cirstea defeated her in the first round.
"Was tough match. Was different surface, different feeling," Schiavone said after her loss. "But she [Dushevina] played very good and I didn't take my chance maybe in the second set."
