French Top 14 round six: Toulon beats up on Agen
Toulon completed a convincing win over Agen at home in Stade Mayol in their round six match-up over the weekend.
Toulon had no trouble with a struggling Agen side at home over the weekend. Toulon got out to an impressive start taking a convincing 26 point lead into halftime. After the break they were able to settle into a defensive game keeping Agen off the score sheet
and adding two more tries themselves. In the end Toulon dominated Agen with a 41-10 victory.
Recap
Toulon came out of the gate strong getting on the board first, with a penalty from fly-half Jonny Wilkinson in the 2nd minute, to give his side a quick 3-0 lead.
Wilkinson struck again in the seventh minute, this time crossing the line for a try and extending the lead to 8-0.
The home side wasted no time getting back across the whitewash, as Dewald Senekal barged his way over in the 11th minute. Wilkinson put through the conversion to make the lead 15-0.
The hosts kept the pressure on early and number-eight Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe burst over the line in the 23rd minute. Wilkinson hit his second conversion to make the game 22-0.
Agen were finally able to get on the board with a penalty from Conrad Barnard in the 26th minute.
However, Toulon kept coming, with Wilkinson scoring his second try and notching his second conversion in the 40th minute, giving his side a convincing 29-3 lead heading into halftime.
After the break Agen battled back with their only try of the game from Florent Cazeaux in the 45th minute. Barnard tacked on the conversion and cut the lead to 29-10.
Nevertheless, that was all the guests could muster and Toulon added two more tries and a conversion to finish off a one sided round six meeting.
Analysis
Toulon will hope that an easy game against Agen will have helped them to find their offensive form. Nevertheless, they will have to remain consistent, something they have had a tough time doing this season, sitting at 3-3. As the season rolls on a quick
turnaround becomes more and more important.
The poor showing against Toulon gives Agen the worst point differential in the League. At minus-80 they are nearly a full 30 points behind last place Bourgoin-Jallieu, meaning they will need to improve their form if they hope to avoid relegation.
