  1. It depends of which part of france but there is one I love is Saint père Marc en poulet in brittany

  2. Villefranche is one of the most popular city or village name in France (it meant city free of the king's taxes), just add 'sur' and the name of a river or spring. Like : Villefranche sur Saone (Villefranche on the river Saone).

If you want a real name go to that site and click on Liste des communes, you will have the names of all the cities, villages etc of France and can choose one.

  3. Mayon

  4. I would say a name that is linked with history of this village.

Some villages have "le" ou "la" (the) in the name

or "grand" or "petit" (the great or the small).

Most of the time, there is an historical background behind the village name. It's often linked to a war that has happened, or a big problem thas has happened (a big fire, too much rain..).

Or something where the village's citizens have showed their bravery.

Too, it's sometimes linked with the economical activity that was there. If the place was famous for his vegetables, this will be shown in the name.

For example there is a city (no longer a village but used to) called "brive la gaillarde". (brive the strong). It was because during a war, this city has been specially proud and strong before and defeated the ennemy.

So, if it's for a book or novel, you can find easily a name using those rules and adding some extra letters to make it look older french (change u letter by v).

  5. le Village
