Question:

French bread dough, made an error...?

I have a recipe for french bread and this is the first time I have tried it, however, I accidentally read the instructions wrong and added the egg yolk to my bread machine instead of using it for brushing on the dough before baking (oops). I was wondering if my bread will still come out decent, or if I completely messed it up. Any suggestions...?

  1. It will be fine:) ... It may make the dough a little richer, and very slightly change the color inside.   btw:  How do you brush egg yolk on bread that's inside a bread machine?   I do it when I bake bread in the oven, but have never brushed bread in my bread machine with anything....

  2. The bread will be fine.  Go ahead and bake it up!

  3. Adding egg to the dough will give it a little more "tooth," and make it chewy. It won't have the shattering crust that French bread traditonally has, but it will still be good.

    Been there, done that.

  4. rolling on the floor giggling my fool head off!!

and you think you are the first person to make this mistake?? The bread will be fine. It just won't be the product you were looking for.

It will be fine bread. Don't worry about that at all. Get another egg yolk to brush on top of the loaf and do not worry about the one you tossed in the machine. You may have to add a tiny bit more flour, not sure, touch the top of the dough and see if it is too sticky. one or two tablespoons more flour won't hurt a thing.
