  1. Maybe this could be it? I asked a similar question about a year ago, the potatoes were more like slices rather than hashbrowns. Hope it helps! It's called tartiflette, the recipe was great w/ ham.

  2. Rosti is what your looking for.

Its actually also a Swiss dish and that's the Swiss name for it.

The Swiss and French take credit for alot of the same cheeses.

A prime example would be Vacherin Mont D'or.

Gruyeres and many other cheeses and cheese dishes are shared by France and Switzerland.

Just look up Rosti( you can buy it premade ( Hero brand) and just add the ham).

There are various ways of doing it.

  3. That's gratin.

  4. It is call Ham and Potato Au Gratin.  Here is a simple recipe.  This one has spinach, but you could use leaks, onions, whatever..

A delicious casserole that has a surprise spinach layer in addition to the traditional ham and potatoes. All baked in a delicious cheesy sauce.

    3  tablespoons butter or margarine

    3  tablespoons all-purpose flour

    2  cups milk

    6  ounces shredded cheddar cheese

    1  tablespoon dijon-style mustard

2  cups cooked ham, cut into thin strips

1 (24  ounce) package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed

1 (10  ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

For the cheese sauce; in a saucepan melt butter or margarine; stir in flour.

    Add milk all at once.

Cook and stir until bubbly; cook 1 minute more.

    Remove from heat.

Stir in cheddar cheese and mustard; set aside.

Place half of the ham strips in an ungreased 2-quart casserole dish.

Top with half of the hash browns and half of the cheese sauce.

Spoon the spinach on top of the cheese sauce.

Repeat layers of the remaining ham, potatoes and sauce.

Bake uncovered 30-40 minutes or until heated through.

I usually make mine with sliced potatos too, but I thought this looked nice and easy and I love spinach.

  5. I'd call it a 'gratin'.

Who on earth was it said it was a  'Rösti'?

Rösti is made with pre steamed potatoes, which are cooled, peeled and grated. They are then browned in butter in a heavy pan . When the underside is browned, the potato is tossed. Or inverted over a large plate and slid back into the pan to brown the other side. In the Canton of Bern, bacon lardons or diced ham may be added.

In Switzerland there is a 'Rösti ditch'. Traditionally Rösti is the preserve of those areas where Swiss German is spoken.

The addition of Gruyère cheese is half-way acceptable, as long as you are prepared to admit that the cheese comes from west of the Rösti ditch.
