French foreign exchange student?

one friend of mine is having a french foreign exchange student stay with her for a few weeks. i'll be spending some time around her then, and i just need any ideas on what i can talk about with her. i have 2 years of high school french, so i'm not fluent or anything, but i know some things. i just want to try to make it less awkward for her, because she's pretty quiet most of the time, and i think she only knows a little bit of english.

plus, since she's my age, can i use the tu form with her, or should i stick with vous?

  1. In my experience, people are grateful if you even try to speak to them in their language.  So, ask about France, her experience in the US, etc.  Stick with what you are comfortable speaking about in French.

"Tu" is not inappropriate if you're the same age and are trying to be friends or buddies.

  2. Ask her stuff about France.
