Question:

French horn complications?

i entered highschool as a saxophone player. halfway through my freshmen year my director asked me to switch to french horn. At first i was excited but grew bored and tired of it. I also played tenors (drumline) for the first time when i tried out for our indoor group. marching season came and i ended up marching mello instead of drumline because we had no mellophone players. I played french horn again for concert season and made honor band. My director insists that i continue on french horn although he is leaving it up to me to decide saxophone or french horn. I'm a junior now and i am marching drumline but i intend on playing sax or horn in the spring for concert. I am stuck. Play sax(the instrument i love) or play horn (sit out the boring highschool music and hope it gets better in college) and have a great opportunity for a career in music...anyone have and opinion???

  1. I usually choose my best students to switch to french horn. They have to have a good ear to hear the intervals. Your band director probably asked you to switch because he needed horns in band and because he knew you had a better chance of getting scholarship money and making it into your All State, region, etc. bands. I strongly suggest you continue with horn, but maybe you can compromise with him and play in  your jazz band on sax? Also,  if you continue on horn, can you ask him if you can learn a horn solo to play with band? If you're looking for a challenge, try the Mozart 1st or 2nd horn concerto. There are band arrangements available. Also, if you choose to teach music, the added brass and woodwind experience will help you. Good luck!

  2. As much as it hurts me (a horn player) to say it, stick with sax.  If you don't love the horn you won't practice as much and you won't get anywhere.  Stick with sax and you will be passionate about everything you do with it which will get you somewhere.

  3. I have an opinion..... you are a smart person!  Horn music can be a pain in high school, you might consider doing some of the classical Horn solos like the Mozart concertos if you stick with it.  I love the horn but I am not you.  Yes, you are correct there is a much greater need in college for horn.  You have got the brains to balance everything and do the right thing.  Good luck in life.

  4. In my opinion ; STICK TO THE ONE YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE.

Who says the music will get any better in college?! It may end

up being the worst choice you make if you don't like the french

horn ; so stick with what you LOVEE and it won't seem terribly

    boring or anything! ♥
