    other answers spoke abt old french music (piaf, hallyday... are 1960s !). but nowadays, there are some french singers called the "french new stage" ("nouvelle scène française") that sounds close to yael naim :

    - carla bruni (you know the french first lady...) : 1st CD is better

    - anaïs ("the cheap show")

    - keren ann (great !!!)

    - constance verluca

    - coco rosie ("la maison de mon bonheur" or sthg like that)

    My name is Frederic, I am french, living in Paris and teaching French to foreigners.

    Let me help you with my answer ( based upon my daily life in France and Paris).

    Charles Aznavour, Piaff, and othe rnames are a lil bit "old".

    New scene ( nouvelle scène) is made of :

    - Zazie ( for "Rodeo"  and " Totem" )

    - superbus ( for " Je reste encore" , " Le loup" )

    -Vanesse Paradis ( " for Joe le Taxi" + "Tandem" + "Divinidille")

    - Julien Doré

    - Jennifer

    - Amel Bent

    - Christophe Wilem ( for " Double Jeu )

    - Alizée ( for "Lolita" )

    - Mylène Farmer ( for " Libertine ")

    - Johnny Halliday ( will retire in 2009 but he is THE french star for ......too many songs. But try " Allumer le feu", " Le pénitencier")

    => all those names are big big sellers in France and  you can listen them on french radio.  They all have won Prices for thei hits !

    I gave you differents styles so you can listen to them but they are all big sellers.
