Bold Predictions: Jankovica appears to find her groove on the court of Roland Garros. Her swashbuckling style of play could be an advantage against Shvedova. On the other hand, Shevedova has a chance to prove her run is not a fluke. A win against Jankovic can certainly catapult her into stardom.
Fourth seed Jelena Jankovic will be playing Yaraslova Shvedova in the upcoming leg of the Roland Garros. Shvedova snagged a 6-4 7-6 win over Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine in her previous match last Saturday.
Despite committing several unforced errors (a total of 33), the Serbian player was able to maintain her cool during crucial moments of the match.
Jankovic, was a two-time qualifier for the Roland Garros semifinals halted Bonarenko’s bid despite discouraging conditions on the Suzanne Lenglen court.
27th seed Bondarenko applied pressure on Janjovic as she tried to push for a turnover during the break down.
Following the tiebreak, Bondarenko was no longer able to catch up and she lost to Jankovic 7-3. The match lasted an hour and 46 minutes when the Ukrainian was not able to push through a routine backhand over the net.
Jankovic has done her part quite well when she worked hard at the Roland Garros to avoid having the same fortune as fellow Ana Ivanovic. Jankovic made it a point to surpass Kaia Kenepi to surge past to the third round of the 2010 Roland Garros.
Jankovic is intent on getting another win that could qualify her to the next and last stretch of the French Open. However before cruising into the finals, Jankovic should push for very good plays.
Throughout the years, the Serbian player has been recognized as one of the player with the best playing form. She is also considered very tough on court particularly due to her impressive footwork and defensive play. Consequently, both aspects led to her recognition as a counter puncher.
Another impressive aspect of Jankovic’s play is her ability to slide on all kinds of surfaces. She was also able to preserve her third rank which only emphasizes her reliable performance and her unbelievable stamina.
Her groundstrokes almost never fail and usually can target the line instead of a mere crosscourt ball. Jankovic is also well known for signature move: the two-handed backhand down the line. Impressively she is able to hit the ball with a remarkable pace and can even push the ball deep which most of the time translates to a winner.
Jankovic also has a strong a forehand and a play which can challenge the opponent into a fierce net game. She efficiently returns balls, drop and even drive them. However, just as she may have own advantages, she also has certain weakness such as her serve. As opposed to baseline players, her serves usually get broken.
Jankovis is up against, Shvedova who has also shared her own victories recently at the Roland Garros. In the first round program, she downed Shenay Perry with a 6-4 6-4 win while winning the next match against Angela Haynes. Shvedova won over Haynes with a 6-1 6-2 set. In the third round, she won over Elena Baltacha pushing for a 6-2 6-2 win. Aside from winning in the initial rounds of the Roland Garros, Shvedova also has won her share of victories such as in the US Open.
She previously won over Jankovic during the tournament and recorded a 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(6), in a match where she saved two match points victory.
Despite Jankovic’s strong presence it cannot be denied that Shvedova also has a shot in the quarterfinals. Her previous victory over Jankovic should even out the odds in the quarterfinals.
