  1. "complément d'objet indirect" (COI) opposed to COD - complément d'objet direct -

Je mange une pomme - COD

Je pense A LA pomme - COI

Concerning living beings - very similar to COI is the "complément d'attribution " - clear, that  my sister eg is not an object -

C'est ma soeur - je LUI parle - is not a COI but a complément d'attribution

  2. Lui goes to il ex: donne lui une pomme =donne une pomme a jean

leur goes to ils /elles: donne leur une pomme = donne une pommes aux garçons/aux filles

  3. And indirect object is the person or persons in a sentence to or for whom the action of the verb occurs.

Indirect object pronouns are the words that replace the indirect object, and they can only refer to a person. (When it's not a person, you use the adverbial pronoun "y".)

In French the indirect object pronouns are:

    me       (me)

    te          (you)

    lui         (him, her, it)

    nous     (us)

    vous      (you)

    leur        (them)

French indirect object pronouns are placed in front of the verb. Thus "Je lui parle" (I'm talking to him).
