French women get past Russia to make it to their first ever Olympics Final: Statistical Breakdown
On a memorable night, the French women basketball team managed their way past Russia 81-64 and booked a place in the Final against USA.
Les Bleus last participated in this event back in 2000 but were only able to finish in fifth position. However in their second participation at the event, France have qualified for their first ever final at the event.
In a total team effort the French had six players scoring in double figures after the game. Edwige Lawson-Wade led the way with 18 points by shooting the ball 4 of 6 from the field. Emilie Gomis shot the ball 6 of 13 from the field
to make her way to 15 points while Céline Dumerc and Sandrine Gruda chipped in with 11 points each in the game.
Isabelle Yacoubou got 6 of her 10 points from the free throw line and at the same time Endéné Miyem converted 4 of 5 attempts from the field to register 10 points.
On the other hand, the Russians only had Alena Danilochkina and Becky Hammon to lead their charge but both combined to shoot the ball 8 of 23 from the field. The remaining Russian roster failed to provide a helping hand as none
of the players managed to get more than 8 points individually.
Russia shot the ball 35.6% from the field thus leading to a poor result in the game while the French converted 28 of their 54 from the field to hold a conversion rate of 51.9%.
Both sides fought equally well on the boards as the Russians managed to grab 31 rebounds while France coped up slightly better by racking up 34. Both teams had their fair share of visits to the free throw line. They both attempted
19 shots from the stripe with the French knocking down 17 and the Russians converting 15.
However one thing that troubled the French was their ability to take care of the ball. They turned the ball over on 16 occasions. The luck though was on their side as the Russians weren’t that good either turning the ball over
14 times during the game.
