Frenchman Julien Quesne overpowers Matteo Manassero for maiden European Tour title, Open de Andalucia
Brilliant Frenchman Julien Quesne landed his maiden European Tour title on Sunday, March 18 when he took over the grizzled field at Open de Andalucía to lift the title.
Having recently joined the mainstream European Tour through his bid in the Challenge Tour, Quesne carded a stunning eight-under, 64 in the heated final round to win his first European Tour title and walked away with the biggest prize money, a whooping €166,660 of his career so far.
Quesne said, “It’s the best day of my life. It’s not easy because you have Matteo Manassero, Miguel [Angel Jiménez], Pablo Larrazábal, they all played good so I just tried to play shot after shot and do my best. I knew that if I holed the putt at the last I’d have a good chance”.
Starting off the final round with a birdie on the opening hole, very few realised that a relatively newbie on the tour will clinch victory in the evening.
Quesne kept on toiling courageously in the face of raging threats of the likes of Matteo Manassero and Eduardo de la Riva and made the turn with four birdies.
He started off back nine with humble beginnings and finally took the offensive on the last six holes, birdying four of them.
He made it through with a solid lead of two shots from the Italian trailblazer Manassero.
He added, “I’m very happy. It’s very quick for me to win this year”.
Previously ranked 322nd on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Quesne has now surged to an unprecedented 183rd and will now be hoping to break into top-100 in the proceeding events.
The 31-year-old Frenchman has won twice on the Challenge Tour and has been playing professional golf since the year 2003.
He has no fewer than seven professional wins on his belt but managed to clinch his maiden European Tour victory after a painstaking wait of eight years.
Meanwhile Italian prodigy Manassero is back in the groove again with a brilliant four-day showdown at Aloha Golf Club, Costa del Sol, Spain.
He finished for an outright second and will be hoping to break into top-50 on the OWGR to qualify for the Masters next month.
