How much would freon cost for an ac unit in a townhouse? Do you have to have it put it by a professional? If not where can it be purchased?

BTW: I live in FL.

  1. Depending on it's age, It probably has 134a or the older R22. In any case a professional is needed. You could overcharge it and damage it or put the wrong type gas into it. Safety and economy are both at stake. Check around and get references from friends and family or go to the manufacturers representatives. LOL

  2. you have to have it recharged by a professional as house air conditioners use R-12 and you have to have a special license to buy it and if it needs recharged it has a leak someplace and the leak needs fixed before they recharge it.

  3. BTW its not called Freon anymore, they changed the formulation to save the ozone layer and its something else now

I'd guess $50 or so and you need someone to do it since its under pressure and you need special fittings and such.  You can buy the stuff but it would be cheaper to have someone come do it since you will only need it every 5 years or so (or never if you don' t have leaks)
