How do frequent flyer points work?

  1. Airlines typically award one point for every mile traveled.  So, for example, New York to Los Angeles return would get you approx. 5,000 FF points.  And most FF programs require you to redeem 25,000 points for a free domestic flight, and upwards of 100,000 points for longer distances.  All you would have to pay would be the usual taxes and fees.  And it doesn't cost you anything to enroll in these programs.
