Fres Oquendo: Joey Abell is a hard hitter but I am well prepared for him – Boxing News
Fres Oquendo, the former USBA and NABA heavyweight champion, recently shared his thoughts about Joey Abell, his upcoming opponent, saying that Joey is undoubtedly a hard hitter and quality southpaw pugilist but he has trained well adding that he already
possesses a good record against lefties.
Fres and Joey are scheduled to take on each other in a 10-round bout with vacant WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title up for grabs. The duo will headline the Friday night showdown which is being promoted by Bobby Hitz of Hitz Entertainment.
The ring for the showdown will be set up at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, United States and the night will be co-headlined by the non-title six-round bout between Elijah McCall and Stanley Allen.
Fres recently put forth his thoughts in a detailed interview and commented that he understands Joey’s stance very well as they both have sparred for a long time in recent past.
Oquendo commented that it was he who prepared Joey for his Chris Arreola venture and gave him the ideas adding that Abell was so happy with him that he relieved all other sparring brawlers from their responsibilities.
Also known as the ‘Fast Fres’ or ‘The Big O’, the 39-year-old Oquendo has been in a total 40 bouts and boasts 33 wins. The veteran has nailed 21 of his opponents by knockout and has proudly held a decent number of titles round his waist during his illustrious
career.
During the interview, when asked as to what he feels about taking on a former sparring partner, Fres stated, “He’s a former sparring partner, a tough kid from Minnesota. He’s a very hard hitter, and has decent talent. He’s helped me before, and I helped
him prepare for Arreola. I was giving him such great workouts that he sent the rest of his sparring partner’s home.”
Oquendo continued and remarked, “I always perform well against big punchers, like Cliff Ettiene and Demetrice King. And I have a great record against lefties. I’m in great condition. I’ve been running, doing my sprints. I’m ready.”
Joey, Fres’ Friday night opponent, has been in a total 35 bouts. The 31-year-old has emerged victorious in a total 28 bouts and has nailed a huge 27 opponents by knockout.
Though he has collected five losses as well yet still he has his lethal knockout ability which has made him quite infamous in the division. The bout will definitely be an interesting and a toe-to-toe one since both men are equal when it comes to stats and
above all known each other well as both have sparred for a considerable time period.
