Fres Oquendo scheduled to take on Joey Abell in a 10-round title bout – Boxing News
Fres Oquendo, the former USBA and NABA heavyweight champion, has finally got his opponent. According to news, will take on fellow countryman Joey Abell, in a 10-round bout which will be held on May 25, 2012.
The bout will have the vacant WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title up for grabs and the ring for the bout will be stretched at Horseshoe Casino situated in Hammond, Indiana, United States. The event is being promoted by Bobby Hitz of Hitz Entertainment and the
pay-per-view is dubbed as the ‘Fight Night at the Horseshoe’.
Bobby, who is also the promoter of Fres, shared his feelings regarding the settlement of the bout and explained the difficulties faced while finding an apropos opponent for his man.
Fres, 39, has been in a total 40 bouts and has emerged victorious in 33 bouts. The Chicago proud has nailed 21 of his opponents by knockout and is considered as a powerful pound-for-pound pugilist.
Oquendo is a hardworking brawler who is gradually making his comeback in his beloved sport after two consecutive high profile losses to Jean-Marc Mormeck and Oliver McCall.
Hitz while sharing his thoughts commented that no one was ready to accept the challenge to take on Fres adding that he sent offers to names like Chris Arreola, Bryant Jennings and others but nobody accepted the proposal.
Bobby commented, “We sent challenges out to a bunch of guys. Chris Arreola, Bryant Jennings, Seth Mitchell, the list goes on, and none of them are willing to fight him. Abell was the only one with the balls to step up.”
While sharing his excitement at the finalisation of the deal, Bobby also shared some intimidating facts about Joey, Fres’ Friday night opponent and remarked, “Joey Abell has 27 knockouts in 28 wins. He can crack. You have to admire a guy like Fres who would
choose a puncher like this as his opponent for a non-televised show in front of his hometown fans.”
Joey, 30, is a rising American heavyweight who has been in a total 35 bouts and boasts 28 wins with 27 of them via knockout. The Minnesota proud is coming from a fourth-round technical knockout win over Emerson Chasing Bear.
Also known as the ‘Minnesota Ice’, Joey has proudly nailed names such as Josh Gutcher, Raphael Butler, Galen Brown and others. Though Fres has a slight upper hand over Joey yet the Minnesota Ice is infamous for having a hard chin and can easily create problems
for the ‘Fast Fres’, if he does not executes his game plan correctly.
