Question:

Freshmen Swimmer?

I'll be a freshmen in September. In the winter, I'm thinking of joining my swim team. I know how to swim, but I rarely get pool time in the summer, and when I do, I'm slow. I know how to float, but it seems whenever I try and 'swim' I either just turtle my way under water, or doggy paddle.

Hence, I don't know how to swim properly. Is that going to handicap me from being on the team? Will they teach me techniques to learn?

Also, what are your experiences? Thank-you.

Oh, and tips<3

  1. well it depends! does the team have cuts or do they let everyone in?

  2. if you dont know any strokes it probably will make it alot harder , but i think if you shouldnt be scared to try it because thats the only way to get better=] good luck!

  3. when I joined my high school team I had 8 years of competitive swimming under my belt. There were several of swimmers that knew virtually nothing and they spend the entire season on JV learning.

If I were you I would take lessons and learn the basics before you start so you at least can have the strokes going into the season and your coach can perfect everything. Swimming is best when its competitive and if you aren't to the basics and have to waste time learning during your school season it will not be as fun. I also recommend that you join a team during your schools off season. That way when you come back you will be better and in shape.

So at least you should learn freestyle and 1 other stroke and, if possible, the freestyle flip turn.

  4. im 13 and im a swimmer on swim team and have been for 5 years so if you want to swim the first month your gonna be in a lot of pain. swimming is not a joke so take it seriously. i swim 5 hours a day. 4 hours during the school year. you should have a lot of time on your hand if you want to swim

  5. Well, that all depends on the coach. A good coach will accept you on the team, provided that the school has sufficient resources to accommodate all comers. My own school never cut anyone. I have no idea what things are like today.

Assuming you make the team, your lack of experience and limited ability will affect only the amount of time you are allowed to compete. Chances are that if there are three swimmers faster than you in any event, you will not swim. That is, unless you are competing against a school that your coach expects to beat handily. In that case, you might be allowed to race

As for learning the techniques, it again depends on the caliber of your school (and league) and coach. Sorry I can't offer anything more specific, but it depends on those factors. A highly competitive league (e.g., Southern California) will probably have little time to teach, since they have an abundance of kids who have been in competitive swimming since first grade. In contrast, an area in which swimming is not a popular sport (Juneau, Alaska?) , they might be happy to spend time educating you.
