Freshwater tropical fish species

Question

hi there. i'm planning to get a freshwater tropical aqarium. i was considering getting a saltwater aqarium but i decided against that because its hard to take care of, so im getting a freshwater tropical aqarium. i liked the idea of a saltwater tank because saltwater fish are amazingly beautiful. could anybody could give me a list of pretty and colourfull species of fish that i can put in my FRESHWATER tropical aqarium please? i would really like colourfull/pretty ones. i've already decided on two that i would like to get, they are rainbow fish and Neon tetras. I'd like atleast some of the fish in my aqarium to be a little big, not massive but bigger then Neon tetras...thanks for any help :)

Rainbow fish and parrot fish come in beautiful colors.

PLEASE read a couple of books, at least, on how to purchase, set up, and use an aquarium; and about tropical fish.  There are several things you should know before starting an aquarium.

Your best bet is to visit the store that you intend to buy the fish from and see what is available.  It also depends on your tank size what fish you will be able to keep.

If you are into the look of a saltwater tank, I'd go with African Cichlids, particularly the electric yellow, electric blue, red zebra and jewel cichlids.  They are so colorful and pretty!  I'm not sure how they'd get along with neon tetras, though.  Glofish are also bright and flashy as are rams and barbs.  Below is a great site for freshwater fish shopping.  Take a look at all the pictures and just click on one that you like to get more info about the fish and what kind of requirements it has.

I would suggest looking into Angelfish.  Make sure they are compatible with what you want to get.  But they are medium sized fish and they are absolutely beautiful.
