Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Steffen Freund believes that the club is not far from ending Arsenal’s 18-year domination of North London, and insists that this season might just see Tottenham finish above their local rivals.
Spurs will travel to the Emirates this Saturday looking to recover from last week’s loss against Manchester City. The team has seen a dip in form ever since http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 brought their 4-game winning run to an end last month.
Tottenham were able to recover from that embarrassing home defeat by beating Southampton next, but lost a game to Wigan at home the week after that. Spurs then tasted defeat once again when they travelled to the Etihad to face reigning English champions
Manchester City.
Having managed 17 points out of 11 games, Spurs are currently 7th in the league table, and have a one point lead over Arsenal. The club will be hoping to extend that lead after this weekend’s derby as they look to finish above Arsenal for the
first time in the last 18 years.
Steffen Freund, who is a former Tottenham player, does not need any reminders about http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429’s dominance over Tottenham, but believes that the time may have come where Tottenham may finally finish above the Gunners.
Freund played for Tottenham from 1998 to 2003, and moved to the club as part of the managerial staff this year under Andre Villas-Boas.
Speaking to the press, the player said:
“Spurs are really close to Arsenal. We are definitely in a better position. In my time, they used to be involved in the title race every year and we finished 9th or 10th. That has changed now. We are really close to our biggest rival.”
This is perhaps the first season where neither team are genuinely contending for the Premiership title, and face a tough race for a top four finish. Freund added:
“It would be great to finish above Arsenal. It would be a great experience for me too because it has never happened for me in the past.”
“I can’t wait for the game. It’s a special game. There are only two of these games every season.”
