Friars rally past Terriers in first home match – Volleyball News
The Providence College volleyball team (Friars) kicked off the action on the opening day of the Eighth Annual Friar Classic by sweeping the Saint Francis Terriers (N.Y.) in straight sets of 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, and 25-18). The match was held at Providence,
Rhode Island on Saturday, September 9. Success against the Terriers helped the Friars to improve to 3-7, while the Terriers fell to 1-8.
The Friars entered the court with an ambition to give a real chance of celebration to their local fans. Home team was equipped with all tools and tricks of the game. They started the operations by hitting long jump-serves with great accuracy. St. Franics
Terriers could not stand in the way of the deadly aces and spikes. They promptly became irresistible and trailed behind. Friars put heavy pressure on the rival side and picked up a strong lead in the first set. The Providence made a difference via the excellent
performance of Carly Morrison, Coleen McCollom and freshman Mackenzie Ziegler. The hosts secured the first set of the game at 25-17 with a hitting percentage of .483.
It was an identical play in the second set as Friars jumped straight into action and restricted the opponents to a low score. Lauren Fletcher, the captain picked five kills on six attack attempts. Likewise, Shelagh Dolan further strengthened the grip of
the Friars by adding three kills. The second set also favoured the Friars, while St. Francis Terriers suffered the set-back 25-19.
Third set was another fine display of volleyball by Friars. They continued with success and did not allow the opposite team to hinder their performance. Perfect combination of players and good attack strategy led the Friars to third set-victory. The Terriers
were unable to overcome the Providence squad and acknowledged their better status in the game. Third set was closed off at 25-18 and Friars were tagged as the victorious team.
Carly Morrison did a great job for Friars as the setter. She set up the ball for attackers with perfect timing and helped them notch quick points. Sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro was excellent at digging and diving on the court. She recorded a total of
17 digs in the match and played a big part in Friars’ win.
The Friars are set to use the confidence of victory in next two matches, which are scheduled to take place on Saturday. They will put up against Coppin State Eagles in the first match. They will wrap up the action of Eighth Annual Friar Classic by taking
