Friday’s Sprint Cup practice session at Martinsville obstructed by downpour – NASCAR news
NASACAR Sprint Cup practice session held on Friday was obstructed by downpour. The seventh Cup Chase event, Tums Fast Relief 500 will be held on Martinsville Speedway.
The rain forced the officials to readjust the practice session taking place on Saturday. The two sessions of 90 minutes before the raceday were not conducted in proper manner. The irregular raining made it almost unfavourable for the cars to hit the track.
Jeff Gordon said, “I'm hoping we get on track and get some laps, get a feel for it. For us, we were pretty strong here the last time and there's a slight tyre change I believe so we would like to think we should be pretty good based on how we were the last
time and we would just make all our adjustments and calls for the race based on what we know from the last time and a little bit of information on the tyre data.”
The practice session for Camping World Truck Series was shortened to adjust the time for Sprint Cup drivers. The rain started to downpour and halted the session for good.
The practice session for Saturday is scheduled to run in morning and the qualifying session will take place in the afternoon.
The weather forecast shows that there will be more rain on the following days. The showers may force the practice and qualifying session to be cancelled. In following condition, the grid will be set as according to the points earned by teams.
In any other case, if the practice session is held and the qualifying session is not conducted, the grid will be aligned according to the results of the last session held.
The teams will be using new Goodyear tyres on the right side for this weekend. The tyres are different as compared to the last outing at the Martinsville Speedway.
The tyres are developed with new compound and different layout to the previous tyres. The new specification Goodyear tyres were also tested by some drivers in August testing.
Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt Jr., David Ragan of Roush Fenway Racing, Jeff Burton of Richard Childress and Bobby Labonte were the few drivers to test the new tyres.
