Question:

Fried Rice in the Netherlands?

I like this dish that I can get from the super market in the netherlands.

It consists of white rice, eggs, chopped/cubed ham, green onions..and something else that is green.

In Indonesia its basically called Nasi Goreng (meaning fried rice)

I found this info on wiki

In the Netherlands, Indonesian-Chinese restaurants may offer nasi goreng spiced to suit Dutch taste. In The Netherlands and Flanders, the word nasi goreng is often used for any Asian style of fried rice.

---------------

But I am curious-- is this really unhealthy to eat?

Or is it healthy?

What do I get from eating this ? Any proteins?

Im asking so I can know if it is safe to make it part of my normal diet or not.

I like the taste of it but as soon as Im finished, I must go to the r-room as it passes through me all at once.. Never any abdominal pain with it, Is this normal?

  1. Healthy - yes. A serving of nasi goreng is a balanced meal.

You get all you need: vegetables, rice and meat - meaning vitamins, fibers, carbs and proteins.

You even get a little fat - from vegetable oil (=healthy fat) - which is essential in absorbing the very important vitamins A and D.

Like with anything else: don't over-do it - you could probably live on nasi goreng for days, but in the long run it would be too one-sided. You must eat a varied diet :)

  2. I am Indonesia living in the Netherlands. Indonesians usually eat nasi goreng as breakfast, unlike in the Netherlands whom people usually eat nasi goreng as dinner and mix it with additonal dish (In Indonesia, nasi goreng is usually a main dish without any additional dish besides it except kerupuk (crackers) or emping).

I think home made nasi goreng is healthier than nasi goreng from restaurant. In restaurant, the hygene should be on question as well - that may caused you have to go to the toilet afterwards.

Home made nasi goreng means that you can control which add-ons to be put in your rice as according to your diet.  In Indonesia, usually we make nasi goreng with eggs, vegetable and chicken/beef/fish - which is pretty good for energy. Have you seen any fat Indonesians from eating nasi goreng every morning? ;)

In the Netherlands, luckily, there are many Indonesian shops or Asian shops that sell nasi goreng ingredients from Indonesia in one package. The nice and delicious brands are Indofood, Enak and Kokita. It is really simple and only take less than 20 minutes of preparation. For healthier purpose, it is better to use veggie oil.

Good luck and hope you will enjoy (home-made) nasi goreng without going to the bathroom afterwards!
