Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brad-Friedel-c7953 has refused to blame manager Andre Villas-Boas for the 0-1 home defeat against Wigan Athletic, and insists that the players were responsible for the poor performance.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas was very disappointed after the home defeat, and labelled the performance as Tottenham’s worst of the season.
The home fans were visibly distraught after the final whistle, and booed the team off the pitch. The fans were perhaps more agitated when Villas-Boas substituted striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526, and voiced their displeasure openly.
This is not the first time the Spurs team has been the subject of boos from the home fans. The team had previously been booed off the pitch in the home draws against West Brom and Norwich City.
Tottenham struggled throughout the 90 minutes, and failed to impose themselves on the visitors. They were perhaps very fortunate not to have conceded more than one goal. The score line clearly flattered the hosts, as it could’ve been much worse.
Ben Watson’s strike was the only goal of an otherwise dismal home display by the North London club. Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi was a mere spectator for most parts of the game, and was not worked by the Spurs attack.
The manager labelled the defeat as Tottenham’s worst performance of the season, but has promised the home fans that the team will bounce back to winning ways. With this weekend’s trip to current English champions Manchester City, Villas-Boas has perhaps
been a bit pre-mature and overly optimistic.
Many will blame the Portuguese for the team’s dismal performance, but first choice goalkeeper Brad Friedel thinks otherwise. Speaking to reporters, the veteran American shots stopper said:
“I don’t think any one of use can take anything from the game today. I thought we were second best from start to finish in a very un-Tottenham like performance.”
When asked if the Villas-Boas’ arrival and ideas may be taking some time to settle in at the club, Friedel replied:
“I think the manager has been very good since he’s been here. I don’t think it’s anything like that. Today, in my opinion, it can be down to the players. I don’t think that the manager has a hand to play in the performance today.”
