Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brad-Friedel-c7953 has admitted that this season could be his last in the English Premier League, stating his age as the primary reason for considering the decision.
The American revealed that he will call it quits the day he is unable to continue at the highest level, and has also ruled out a move back to the MLS given his age.
The 41-year old goalkeeper has enjoyed an impressive 15-year career in the English Premier League, since he first arrived from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385,
Aston Villa and Tottenham. The player has also served loan spells at Newcastle United and Galatasaray in the mid-nineties.
Friedel ruled out a move back to his homeland and said that at his age, it is very unlikely that he will be able to compete and perform with the same ability and drive that saw him become one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League. Speaking about the
matter, he said:
"How much more do I got? Let's get through this [season] first. I have a year left on my contract and at my age, it really does go year to year. We'll see how things progress and at that point, I'll make a decision on my future. If I couldn't do it anymore
at the highest level, then I wouldn't want to play. I wouldn't sign a contract."
"It's getting harder and harder to consider [MLS] because of my age. I've been really fortunate to have these opportunities in the Premier League with big clubs. It's always superseded any negotiations that I've started with MLS."
Friedel went on to praise the MLS and talked about the progress it has made over the years. He said that it has produced one of the finest American goalkeepers over the years and named Everton’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tim-Howard-c35095 as an example, calling him an ‘experienced goalkeeper
with a tremendous career’.
With Friedel considering retirement, Tottenham will have to step up their pursuit of signing a permanent replacement for the American veteran. The club is said to be interested in Lyon’s French international goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Lloris-c16408, but a deal to bring the
Frenchman to White Hart Lane has failed to materialize thus far.
