Friend's Daugher with ADD?

Question

I have a good friend who has a daughter with ADD. My wife told me that it's not good to have her hang out with my boys.

1) She is a bit hyper.

2) Has emotional problems and say suicide things.

3) Tortures her pets and dogs. So far all her hamsters, guine pig and a chowchilla died. (5 total).

4) Her mom also has this problem and had some serious problems with alchohol and men in her past.

I really care about my friend and his family. We all go to church. If it was just me and my wife, I would not mind hanging with them. Just don't know if it's a good idea to have my sons hang out with them. Any advice?

thats not an attention deficit thats a discipline deficit, barring that, the kid is a psychopath. its not add/adhd...yet another kid/parent using adhd as an excuse to be a hellion......

the kid needs discipline, and possibly professional help, and the parents may as well.

ADD kids do not torture animals. It sounds like there is a lot more going on than ADD. I think that is probably the least of this childs problems

is something we should woory about and we should go to a dr for that but just cause she as add does nt mean she shouldnt hang out with her

OK.  First of all these are not all signs of a child with ADD, children with ADD do not torture animals. Well it is not part of the ADD. ADD is Attention deficit disorder which simply put is the kids are usually hyper and can not concentrate on things for long amounts of time. The usually do have disciplinary problems, but not suicidal tendencies of torturing animals. depending on the age of the child ... the animals could have been accidents if the child is under 6 there is a good chance she does not know how to play with animals that small. If she is an older child than it goes deeper than the ADD. The child could very well have emotional problems steaming from her mothers drinking and the constant changes in her life with her moms boyfriends. But I do not believe all of this comes from ADD. Most children with ADD function very well on there medications. They calm down a lot and are able to complete task they once could not. But if this child is really hurting these animals on purpose and saying these suicidal things, If you and the parent are that close you need to speak with the parent about the child getting some professional help. Let the parent know you have heard the child talk about suicide or your children have and that it worries you for there child's safety as well as yours. I hope this helps a little.

Your in a difficut situation. I understand how your wife feels you don't say how old your kids are  but if your boys know right from wrong and you sit them down explain to them this girls situation and that she need help making the right decission maybe your boys can help her see that what she is doing is wrong. Let me state that ADD does not mean they don't know wrong from right because they are not stupid and most have higher than average intelegence so if this child is tortorering things there is a problem beyond ADD. It could be A) her parents haven't provided her with the a set schedule which by the way, ADD kids really need.

or B) They don't understand the full aspect of having a child with ADD and that they need more boundries than children who don't along with a proper diet.  I appaud you for your stand to be thier friend, I am sure they apprecate it.
