Friend Codes For Nintendo DS Are Not Working...?

I have been trying over and over again to register my friends Friend Code. I put it in correctly and it says that the code is incorrect each time. Whats going on? The game I am using is Mario Kart. Why won't it work?

Are you putting spaces between each of the four numbers?

eg. 0000 0000 0000 instead of 000000000000.
