was here on a Student Visa went home to visit his family and is now trying to come back to resume his studies. His classes have already started and he is still waiting on his visa to come back. How long does he have before he has to wait for the next set of classes to start. Seeing as he should already be here and attending classes but can not because he is still waiting on his visa to become ready?

How long he has before he has to wait for the next set of classes to start is completely up to his school.  His situation is not that uncommon - many foreign students choose to remain in the US in order to avoid the delays associated with getting the visa renewed.  It is vital that he contact his Designated School Official (DSO)/foreign student advisor to discuss his current status.
