Question:

Friend is doing a speach about homeschool?

He WAS anti homeschool, so he picked this topic to speak on....however, (as usual) once he started doing the research, he realized what a great option it really is.

He has 2 sections in his speech-academics and socialization. However he needs a third-can you think of another that is pertinent to his speech? I told him "socialization" was a broad category, but he doesn't have a lot of time left too re-write.

  1. I am not clear on whether or not he is changing his speech to match his new opinion.

If he is still speaking AGAINST it, I will offer this:

In homeschooling, some emotions impact the process that don't occur when the teacher is not a relative.

I found it to be difficult even to teach my kids how to drive the car.

It seemed I had less patience with them than I had with other people's kids.  I had a higher expectation of them.  They had difficulty because they had a greater desire to please me.

If he is speaking FOR it, I offer this:

Each child can progress at their own rate.  No one is held back or pushed forward based on a curve.  (To be successful, a child has to become self-motivated because there is no competition though...)

In public school, the teacher calls on a student to answer a question in front of the class.  Say his answer is not correct.  Which answer sticks in YOUR child's mind?  Was it the first answer he heard, the last answer, or the WRONG answer?

  2. What about family values, family unity, etc.?

  3. It is broad but it is so often trotted out to make an argument against HS, that I think he should address it. A good place to start is by questioning the the assumption that proper socialization is learned from peers in a public school setting. I think that is an unrealistic belief. Some people say HS kids are "weird", but who decides what is normal and is "normal" something to strive for? He can also bring up the possibilities for diverse interaction with community members outside of school. We've found HS opened up a new world of exciting possibilities for our child, rather than limiting her ability to socialize. But, like PS, HS is what you are able to make it. Tell your friend to call up some homeschoolers and see what they do for fun. Find out which ones have active social lives and which ones don't. Find out what they are doing to be successful/satisfied socially and how that differs from the unsuccessful/unsatisfied HS kids. Do the same with PS kids. Really, that can all be summed up in 5 min of a speech. It is the research that is time consuming. Tell him good luck for me.

  4. No offense, but if he was ANTI he shouldn't be chaning is TUNE or TONE, it can affect his grade

LIKE IT or NOT he has to defend his position to the best of his ability, otherwise he shouldn't be a PRO BONO attorney but become a prosectutor or cop!

    Anti homeschool issues

People who are lazy and don't open books learn less than those forced to be in classrooms and face lectures.  Like it or not they absorb 10% just by osmosis.

Homeschool doesn't have Chemistry Labs, Physics Labs, Band, Choir, Auto Shop, Wood Shop, Plastics Shop, Electronics  Shop, Fibre Glass Shop, Metal Shop, Professional drill presses, audio visual equipment, a school radio station, a school newspaper printing press, a school cafeteria manned by students at lunch time who learn how to serve food, make food, wash dishes in a professional automated machine.

Do I have to go on and I favor homeschool!
