hi, i have a friend who does drugs on a regular basis, anything from pot to alcohol to acid and cough syrup, but no matter how much is taken, he remains mostly unaffected

for an example, at a beach outing a few weeks ago he took 3 hits of strong acid and was somewhat giggly, but that was about it. he is 190 5 11', can anyone explain this?

  1. There are individuals in the population that are known as 'rapid metabolizers or fast acetylators.'  Essentially, their enzyme system in the liver which breaks down drugs faster than the average human.  These individuals will also typically have decreased response to pain medication and require increased dosages.  Consequently there also exist slow metabolizers who will have the effects increased and the duration lengthened.  Your friend is likely a fast metabolizer and thus a normal variant.  Hope this helps.

  2. He did it too much and his body is used to it.  He's pretty much dead inside though.

  3. He may be more affected than he appears. He certainly should not get behind the wheel of a car.

But there's something else happening here.  Your friend is taking all kinds of drugs on a regular basis.  He's probably in the early stages of addiction. If you and your friends indulge in this kind of constant drug-taking, you're not only hurting yourselves but you're hurting your friends by encouraging this kind of body-damaging (and sometimes ultimately life-ruining) behavior.  Be good friends to each other--stop encourging these big drug parties you keep doing.

  4. he may have a strong immune system and may be able to tolerate heavy doses of drugs
