Question:

Friend said that ocean going ships no longer use fins or wings which pivot as stabilizers. Is this true?

He described devices that I call thrusters, and thrusters are NOT used to stabilize an underway oceanliner from rolling in a heavy sea, or am I wrong?

  1. Thrusters let the ship dock without tugs. Stabilizers are still used for roll control as you thought.


  2. Mark T has it. Stabilization systems on cruise ships use active stabilizers (what you've described) and anti-rolling tanks (flume tanks).
