My friend's mother passed almost a month ago. He has been living with his father while this occurred. His father most likely would not tell him how to collect his social because, hi dad owed/owes his mother child support. My questions are, If he does begin to collect his mothers social, how does he go about beginning the process? Also, if he begins to collect his mothers social, will his dad have to keep paying child support until he graduates high school or would his dad no have to pay any money? Thanks.

  1. take a copy of her death certificate to the social security office and they can and will help him do the paper work required

  2. He needs to go to the Social Security office and file for Survivors benefits.

He can also check the Social Security website, google it, the right one will have .gov at the end.

As for dad paying child support, if he goes to live with dad for good.. probably not. After all who is he going to pay the support to? Himself?

Also.. if friend is under 18, then dad may be the one who gets the social security checks.. as he'll be guardian. Unless he has another relative where he can live that will be sure the money is properly handled for him.
