Friends Provident T20: Duckworth-Lewis method takes Kent to the quarterfinals

The Duckworth-Lewis method assisted Kent to the quarterfinal stage of the Friends Provident T20 Cup against a spirited Glamorgan side on Friday. Some disciplined bowling, supported by heavy rain powered Kent to a 14-run win over Glamorgan in Cardiff on an overcast day. Even Mark Cosgrove’s whirlwind half century could not help Glamorgan overcome its 10th defeat in the last 16 games. Glamorgan was playing at 95 for three in 14.4 overs when rain started to pour across the ground. The game was abandoned and Kent was declared as the winning team under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Denly followed Van Jaarsveld in the next over when Tait disturbed his middle stump. Before losing his wicket, Denly smashed Tait for two consecutive shots for a six and a four respectively. Denly’s aggressive 30 run innings during a 21 minute stay at the crease entertained the audience with three boundaries and a six. A fourth wicket partnership between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s all-rounder Azhar Mahmood and Geraint Jones added just six runs to the score card. Jones was run out by Dalrymple while taking a careless and needless run. The visitors collapsed from 42 for 1 to 50 for 4 in 6.4 overs.

The next man to lose his wicket was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Coles-c51379 could only add seven runs to the teams total before he was bowled by Australian pacer Shaun Tait. Tredwell lost his wicket to the last ball of the innings. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the lower order took Kent to a competitive total of 158 for 9.

Both Shaun Tait and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-Cosker-c1350 took two wickets each, conceding 28 and 23 runs respectively in their four over spells. The rest of the five bowlers shared one wicket each with James Harris being the most expensive one, ending with an economy of 9.50 runs per over.

Will Bragg and Mark Cosgrove started the run chase in an impressive manner, laying down a decent foundation with an opening stand of 43 runs. Bragg was the first one to depart after he nicked Tredwell to Stevens in the 8th over. Cosgrove and Tom Maynard added 44 more runs for the second wicket stand and strengthened Glamorgan’s position in the match but Kent’s bowlers and the overhead rain had other plans. Maynard and Cosgrove lost their innings with a gap of one over; leaving http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glamorgan-c784 behind in a trembling situation that was confirmed by the torrential rain that abandoned the game just after Cosgrove’s dismissal.

The match could not be resumed due to heavy rains and the umpires had to consult the brutal D/L method. The D/L method revealed that Glamorgan’s score at that stage should have been 109 but they were much behind at 95. As a result, Kent was declared as the winning team in the end.
