Friends Provident T20: Warwickshire beat Worcestershire by 9 runs
Warwickshire beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 by 9 runs in a rain curtailed T20 match in the Friends Provident T20 in Birmingham on the 16th of July, 2010. Due to overcast conditions, the match was cut down to 15 overs a side. As a result, Warwickshire did not find it easy to bat in wet conditions and managed to score a paltry112 runs in their allotted quota of overs.
Worcestershire kept a check on the opposition batsmen and did not let them get away with easy runs. Jonathan Trott was the man to shine for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warwickshire-c862 who notched up another top class 53 runs for the side. Worcestershire in reply had to deal with more problems in rainy conditions as they found it difficult to get going. A decent target of 113 in 15 overs turned into a monumental task and Worcestershire could only manage 103 runs for the loss of 7 wickets and fell short by 9 runs in the end.
Jonathan Trott was coming off a good spell with the national side after the ODI’s against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 where he scored heavily. He opened the batting alongside Carter but his partner was dismissed on the very first ball that he faced. Ali got one to move away and Carter got the leading edge, giving the bowler an easy catch. Barker walked in and did not fare any better as he was dismissed for just 2 runs from 5 balls. Mitchell caught Barker in the 3rd over off the bowling of Ali.
Troughton finally gave some support to Trott who found it easy in the middle. Trott continued to play his typical stylish cover drives and cuts and proved that there were no daemons in the pitch. However, Troughton was dismissed after scoring 18 runs from 18 balls with 3 fours. He was caught by the Sri Lankan Veteran Sanath Jayasuriya off the bowling of Choudhry.
Darren Maddy came to the middle and formed a good partnership with Trott. Soon, runs started to flow from both ends. However, not at a rapid pace as the pitch was not that easy. Maddy was dismissed after a stand of 55 runs with Trott with a personal score of 27 runs from 21 balls with 2 fours and a six.
All-rounder Rickey http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 was in next and got 10 runs from 7 balls with one big six. On the other end, Trott was unbeaten at 53 from 38 balls with 6 fours as Warwickshire ended their innings at 112 for 4 in the allotted quota of 15 overs.
A required rate of almost 7.5 in 15 overs would not have looked such a big task when Worcestershire began their innings. But they go the worst possible start as Vikram Solanki was dismissed on the very first ball of the innings. He was caught at the second slip by Troughton off the bowling of Carter. Jayasuriya also went on his first ball as he was caught by Maddy at point off the bowling of Woakes.
At 14 for 2, Worcestershire was looking in trouble. Ali and Kervezee started rebuilding the innings as the pair added 20 runs when Ali was caught by Maddy off the bowling of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-c64193 Tahir.
The required rate at the time had crossed the 10 runs per over mark. Manuel in an effort to go for the big shots early in his innings lost his middle stump to Piolet for just 3 runs. Andrew in the end tried his best with a personal score of 17 runs from 11 balls with 1 four and a six, but Worcestershire could only muster 102 in the end and fell short by 9 runs. Piolet from Worcestershire was named as the man-of-the-match.
