Question:

Friends all going away to Uni?

Hi. Most of my childhood friends are going away to Uni. I've chosen to go to a Uni close to home, because I hate too much change. I'm really gonna miss my mates and I don't want us to drift apart... I think its important to stay friends with people who knew you when you were young. I also loved my school... I was so comfortable there, because I knew everyone and everything. It was like a second home. I feel really sorry for the people who are going far away from home to study, because they must be worrying 10 times more than I am.

How can I cheer myself up?

Thanks for any helpful answers!

  1. I was one of the ones who went away to Uni 25 years ago.  Sure it was scarry, but I looked at it as a challenge.  Change is good.

I met a lot of new people and eventually lost contact with the people who did not leave home.  I was from a small town and 50% of the people I went to HS with are still there.  It is a resort town and only 2 are business owners - the rest work for factories and stores.  I could have never stayed there without experiencing the world by living in different areas and having different jobs.

But if you are staying put, become the Alumni contact for your class.  Be the one who is the glue that binds everyone together.

    Good luck!

  2. You will make new friends at uni and you can still meet up with your old mates at weekends etc. Also chat on the phone, email etc. Going to uni away from home was the best thing I did! Your true friends will stay your friends no matter how far apart you are!

  3. All I can tell you is make sure that you and your friends keep in touch. Be sure to exchane phone numbers when you get new ones.

    Good Luck!!!

  4. If you don't like change, then I expect all your friends moving away is going to be a bit of a scary time for you as this in itself is a big change. However it is so easy nowadays to keep in contact with people, via the internet, mobile phones etc, so don't worry about losing contact, and I'm sure they are feeling the same as you at the moment! Try talking to them and maybe make some plans now to go and visit your friends at their different unis, then you can look foward to seeing them and meeting their new friends. Also, you will make lots of new friends too, but this doesn't mean you need to lose contact with your oldest friends.
