Hi all. My husband and I have been granted visa for permanent stay in Australia. I want to make friends out there. Are there any forums/chat rooms where I can meet new people. Also, Anyone knows what is the average expenditure for a couple in Australia?

Thanks. Cheers

  1. I live in Adelaide but I've spent a bit of time in Melbourne. I don't know about chat rooms etcetera (I'd be cautious of them, you never really seem to know who you're talking to - and that's coming from a sixteen year old), but Melbourne has a great night life. There's lots of restaurants and clubs, not to mention there are usually people wandering around the town. Given that you've only just moved here, I imagine people would be more than willing to meet you. Perhaps you could join some kind of group that interests you in an attempt to meet more people. Welcome to Aus :)

  2. rent about $1000 a month

  3. I can't think of any general forums or chat rooms, but if you have some particular interest or hobby, there is sure to be one. You could also try Alliance Francais in the city you will be living in - I think there is a chapter in every capital city

Living expenses are very variable between individual couples and of course it will depend on your lifestyle, but you can expect to pay at least $50k per year (probably a fair bit more) for the basics (accomodation, food, clothing, entertainment etc) unless you live quite simply.

I see you have interest in Higher Education jobs?

  5. To be honest, making friends on chat rooms isn't the best way to make friends in Melbourne.

Go visit the city and places like Carlton where everyone is friendly! You'll make a lot of friends there.

Also, visit Italian and Greek restaurants regularly as they Greeks and Italians are very loving people.

With your job, you're guaranteed to make friends as well.

When people come to Melbourne they're surprised that we are so friendly!

Congratulations on getting a permanent visa! It must be very exciting!

    :)
