Friendship will not be hurt by a singles contest says the Italian duo of Errani and Vinci – Tennis News
World number 10, Sara Errani, will lock horns with her best friend, Roberta Vinci, in the quarter-final of the US Open Championship on Wednesday. In an all-Italian contest, the 25-year-old Errani is the favourite to power down
the 29-year-old Vinci. However, the doubles partner crashing out against one another in the singles contest is always an amazing sight.
On Tuesday, both players powered down the team of Julia Goerges and Kveta Peschke in the quarter-finals of the doubles category. During a joint press conference, a reporter asked a question that what effect will the singles conquest
have on either of the two players and Errani suddenly stopped him in the middle and kiddingly stated, “Hey, it’s a news conference with both of us here. Go ahead; ask her how she’ll play tomorrow.”
Vinci jumped in the conversation as well and commented about her potential strategy that she will use against her best fellow, “topspin backhands”. Everyone was cheered up at the conference room while the Italian senior partner
further added, “I’ll stand seven metres behind the baseline”. She wasn’t finished before her younger partner interrupted and stated, “Come on, you can’t ask us questions about that!”
After the joke was over, Vinci commented, “Playing a Slam quarter-final for the first time is amazing. There definitely will be some jitters, but I think that’s normal. She’s maybe used to this sort of thing.” Errani again came
across as a sweet pal and stated, “I wouldn’t say I’m used to it. Not quite.” The Italian placed an objection on her friends comment in a funny fashion.
Putting some limelight into the past of both these players, they have played five matches in their professional career and the 10th ranked Italian has won the last three of them. Last contest was played in the current
season during the semi-final of the Abierto Mexicano in Acapulco and Errani won it in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
So, technically speaking the 25-year-old has a greater chance of ousting her doubles partner than Vinci but the upset is still on the cards because both players know each other extremely well.
