“Friendship with Jeff Fisher is a reason to join St. Louis Rams,” admits Gregg Williams – NFL News
St. Louis Rams’ newly appointed defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, while attributing his decision of joining the franchise, with close friendship between him and the Rams’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, said on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, that he could not say ‘no’ when Fisher sought his help.
Williams, who was previously serving New Orleans Saints, shared these views a day after the Rams officially announced his appointment.
“Jeff Fisher and I are very, very close. Friendships and relationships in this industry are hard to come by. I have a very close and tight circle of friends,” Williams said.
“I consider Jeff one of my closest friends. He needed my help and I couldn’t tell him no,” he added.
Fisher and Williams served Tennessee Titans together. Williams, who has served as defensive coordinator at different franchises, thinks that his experience will be useful in strengthening the Rams’ defensive line.
Williams started his professional career in 1990 as a special teams’ coach. Apart from the Titans and the Saints, he has coached Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Rams ended the regular season of the National Football League (NFL) as one of the worst teams. They managed to win only two games and were placed at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) West division after losing 14 games.
On an average, they allowed 152.1 rushing yards to the opponents and were ranked at 31st spot in the NFL rankings, in terms of run defence.
Not only that, they allowed an average of 25.4 points per game and accordingly ranked at 26th spot.
The Rams fired their then head coach and general manager after the dreadful season and introduced Fisher, who announced appointment of new defensive and offensive coordinators on Monday.
While emphasising on the management’s plan to revamp the Rams’ tarnished image, Williams said that he would try to induce new energy into the defensive unit.
Williams said:
“What you’ll see is that everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve been able to get a top five defence during the time I’m there, anywhere from one to four, one to five, in all of the stops I’ve made. When we do that, it’s because I will adapt to the strengths of the people there”.
It is pertinent to mention that Williams and Fisher share chemistry which might be useful for the Rams, but it does not necessarily mean that the Rams would reach the new winning heights after Williams’ appointment as the on-field performance is dependent entirely on the players.
