Froch discusses Super Six solution to Kessler withdrawal
Today Carl Froch spoke about the status of the Super Six Boxing Classic Tournament in which he is a contestant. The former super middleweight champion confirmed on BBC Radio a number of reports made by Boxingscene.com, including the unexpected bowing out of Mikkel Kessler, and the format of the remaining bouts.
Originally there were three bouts to be held in a round-robin stage: Froch-Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell-Andre Ward and Kessler-Allan Green. With Kessler’s withdrawal, Froch confirmed the bouts not including Kessler will go on as scheduled, and that fifth member and replacement contestant Allan Green will be dropped from the competition. "There's me and Abraham left and we're fighting. Andre Ward versus Andre Dirrell is the other semi. So in the final, you'll have a WBC-WBA unification fight. After the final, Kessler's got a shot at the WBC," Froch clarified.
With Kessler bowing out, his WBC title, which he won in a second stage bout against Carl Froch, will be vacated. It will be awarded to the winner of the Froch-Abraham fight scheduled for October 2. Kessler will be guaranteed a bout against the winner.
A guaranteed match for Kessler with the winner of the tournament may mean that other titlists who have been chosen as opponents for the winner, such as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute or Ring Magazine champion Jean Pascal, will have to wait for a shot.
Froch continued: “Kessler will be what they call the 'marital' WBC champion, which means that Abraham and I are fighting for my old title. It means I'll be world champion assuming I do the job properly and Kessler would get a shot at challenging for his old belt back because he vacated it.” He finished with, "So there's an undisputed world title fight in the final, which will probably be at Madison Square Garden in New York. I've got to do the business in my next fight, or it's curtains."
