Froch’s comments refuted
In a surprising turn of events, comments that super middleweight contender Carl Froch made yesterday on a radio program have been refuted by officials representing the World Boxing Council (WBC).
Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman contacted boxingscene.com to clarify that Froch’s upcoming bout with Arthur Abraham on 2 October has not been sanctioned as a title fight.
Froch stated that due to the withdrawal of Mikkel Kessler, Kessler’s WBC title would be vacated and given to the winner of his bout with Abraham.
Mikkel Kessler, who currently holds the title after winning it from Froch last round in Showtime’s Super Six tournament, is expected to need nine months to recuperate from an eye injury that is problematizing his vision. He stated publicly that he regrets his withdrawal and warded off the injury for his first two bouts, but could not do so for a third.
With Kessler’s bowing out, it is nevertheless expected that the WBC super middleweight title will be awarded to the winner of Froch-Abraham since they are the two highest ranked contenders. The WBC ranks Andre Dirrell at No.1, but he will be taking on WBA champion Andre Ward on 25 September. The bout has yet to find a venue, and in due course may have to be postponed.
"We have been in contact with all the camps, all of the promoters, and Showtime,” Sulaiman confirmed. “The WBC agreed to be part of Super Six and to support the Super Six tournament, so we do not want to interfere with the tournament and we want to support the tournament. So we are trying to take [care] of the situation. All of the camps they have sent their letters, with their positions, and we are sending this to the WBC's board of governors for a voting."
Froch and Abraham are tied on points in the tournament, each with a win and a loss. The winner of their bout will take on the winner of Dirrell-Ward in the final.
