Okay, I've watched some Australian Rules Football over the past few years and have really enjoyed it. But my question is more cultural than anything:

How many times has some snooty English nitwit come on this board and said how their football (We call in Soccer in the states) is the "Real" football and how the Australian version of the game should be renamed?

We get this all the time from the freaking Brits when it comes to American Football. Do you have the same problem?

  1. the correct name for (soccer)is football its been played in britain for centuries long before usa was even heard of,i agree you americans should have a different name for your gridiron ,while were on the subject of gridiron why do they wear so much padding (are they scared of getting hurt)and it stops every few seconds (oh so boring),and please dont tell me that its tougher than rugby league as we have seen a few of your players here to play and could't get passed the training ,our main game in new south wales and queensland is rugby league sometimes refered to as footy,as  aussie rules is in 3 other states ,ps what would an american know about culture anyway

  2. Yeah, but in your case I have to agree. The ball touching the foot in Gridiron is such an infantestimally small part of the game it really doesn't warrant that sport being called a "football" code!

  3. Yes, but you should know we call soccer, "soccer" in Australia too.

  4. its all a matter of geography - i'm scottish and rugby appears similar to american football, think need to check the history books to see who was playing which kind of football first.
