Question:

From DOGS to CATS? same problems?

just curious if you cat folks have the same problems as the dog people.

are there "designer" mixes? we have the problem of people breeding "doodles" and "schnoodles" for the sole purpose of ripping people off for a mutt.

and what about breeding in general? do people come here asking questions about breeding that they should be asking a vet? are people irresponsible about spay/neuter because they think their kittie wants/needs or deserves to have kittens?

BTW: i do have 2 housecats, spayed and neutered. i'm well aware how many house pets are euth'd yearly.

  1. Yeah, it's always something.  A lot of - what breed is my cat? when if they were something other than domestic short/long hair ones the owner would already know and the standard emergencies that require the personal attention of someone with medical training.  Plus a bit of people thinking all cats should get the opportunity to breed or that kitty cat abortion is the worst thing they've ever heard (how it's worse than killing already active, adorable kittens I just can't understand).  And the attitude that giving away kittens to random people for free on craigslist will actually ensure that they get good homes.

    It can be upsetting.

But there are some good questions too - people with vet appointments who just want some ideas of what they could hear tomorrow, people showing adorable pictures of their kitties, people looking for advice with the kitty they just saved from the outside...

I can't understand the designer mutts either.  Some people just seem to want to put their own little useless stamp on nature and make some $ off of people who don't know any better.

  2. "designer" mixes - never had a purebred, so i dont know.

breeding  - cat breeding is not that popular, so not many questions, but everybody asks questions like" my cat is bleeding from eyes, her leg just fell off and she is laying on the floor having trouble breathing. what do you think is wrong?" then when we say VET! they get mad at us.

"are people irresponsible about spay/neuter because they think their kittie wants/needs or deserves to have kittens?"

    yes.

one thing we have that you dont is detoeing. some call it declawing, because it makes them feel better about cutting off a cats toes.

  3. Oh yeah. Polydactal kittens (6+ toes). Some lady here is "breeding" them and asking $100 for barn cats. That's all they are. No shots, not fixd, no health guarantee.

I love it when someone says "my cat needs to have babies at least once!"

Ever introduce a mom cat to a kitten she gave birth to years ago? She doesn't recognize it!

    edit:

the lady that sells the many toed kittens calls them "Mitten Kittens"

I forgot. I about died when I heard it. Mitten kittens! I wonder how they sleep at night?

  4. Yes, it is a major problem.

    check some of these out>

And the Bengals are already all too common in the shelters!

Out tiny community has 120 cats in our shelter, and three managed colonies of ferals/dumped. (compared to 20 dogs)

There are far more cats than dogs euthanized daily in pounds and shelters.

And just as with dogs..people are still trying to create more breeds. You can bet that they, too, will end up in shelters.

This shows 302 Bengals listed on petfinder>

And that doesn't count the ones in breed rescues.

Yep, just what we need..another breed
