because hes so smart, and could counter what  kira did even if everyone else thought he was wrong. He could think so far ahead and so detailed only Kira could match him

Well it's probably because how L is the second most smart person in the story and he's more humorous than Light.

I understand what Light wants to accomplish, but still killing peple is wrong. No one has the right to take the life of another.

To me L is just more appealing as a character. I really think he is awesome. He is smarter than Light, without the Shinigami (sp?) he would have been caught.

Light is trying to accomplish things in the world, but really he's just killing people, even ones that haven't really done anything (*SPOILER* like that dude on the subway.) L is smarter, and already knew Light had done it the minute he had meet him.

Another thing, who can resist those raccoon eyes? ^-^

L is awesome because is super smart and can figure out everything when Light thinks that he doesn't know but in the end of the episodes or in the middle you know how he kinda reveals what he thinks to Light as a suspect? well it's cool! and i love how he sits on his chair with his knees up and his thumb on his mouth kinda hunched over...I LOVE L!!♥ Iiked Kira kinda at first too but then he got crazy and i was like d**n h**l NO!! so ya...
