  1. YES Nation rail via Southampton & Reading. get on to Nation rail in advance booking can be £43.00 Travel time 5 hours. Two changes Southampton & Birmingham New street

  2. Routes would be as follows

Portsmouth Hbr - Bristol Temple Meads - Liverpool Lime Street

Portsmouth Hbr - Basingstoke - Reading - Birmingham New Street - Liverpool Lime Street

Portsmouth Hbr - Clapham Junction - Watford Junction - Birmingham New Street - Liverpool Lime Street

Quite frankly the amount of changes you may have to make and the time it would take going around the country you could be looking at a 7 to 10 hour trip at least.

Another alternate if you do not want to use the underground would be

Portsmouth Hbr - Gatwick Airport - London St Pancaras - Euston - Liverpool Lime Street.  Yes you are going through London, however, the First Capital Connect from Gatwick to St Pancaras is overground and only has a few minutes underground as it passes under the Thames and St Pauls (city Thameslink), the distance between St Pancaras and Euston is about a 5 - 10 minute walk along the Euston Road if you do not want to use the tube and would take you about 5 - 6 hours for total journey if you catch the fast London - Liverpool service.

the direct route to London Waterloo, Northern Line to Euston (6 stops) and then Euston to Liverpool Lime Street is obviously the quickest which can be cut to almost 5 hours with the right trains and connections.

Good Luck, dont forget to ensure you get into your local station to make an early booking and seat reservations whatever you choose.
