  1. Take the M1 and head for Drogheda, 30 miles north of Dublin on the River Boyne which has many fascinating buildings including St. Laurence’s Gate and Millmount Motte and Martello Tower.  The relics of St. Oliver Plunkett, martyred in 1681, are preserved in St. Peter’s Catholic Church in the town centre.

Head out to Newgrange, the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chamber in Europe (3000BC), which predates the Egyptian Pyramids. (Directions from Drogheda at the site below)

Go back to the MI and and continue to the N1 towards Newry. Take the A25 skirting the Mountains of Mourne the inspiration for C.S. Lewis's magical world The Chronicles of Narnia, to Rathfriland and take the Bronte Homeland Drive, an 8 mile sign posted drive from Drumballyroney that takes the visitor to many areas and buildings connected with the novelist sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte.

Head back to Newry and take the A28 to Armagh where you can visit the Navan Fort, an Iron Age burial site at the royal seat of the Kings of Ulster and the Province’s ancient capital.  Visit the Iron Age dwelling and through Living History interpretation, learn about their way of life.

The A3 will take you to Lisburn and back to the A1 for Belfast.  If you have time you could detour on the A7 to Downpatrick, the buriel place of St. Patrick and visit the Saint Patrick centre.

  2. how are you travelling? by car?
