From hits to homers! Baseball Batting Records- MLB Feature
Baseball is a game where every single pitch is recorded and every single event holds its own significance. Records that are over a century old are still maintained and this aspect of the ball game makes it even more intriguing.
The recording process takes place in every single game at all levels. Major League Baseball, the highest level on which the game is played on in US started in the 1870’s. Since the inception, many top quality professionals have performed extra ordinary feats
and achieved long lasting milestones.
These achievements have been made in all three fields of the game, the pitching, the batting and the fielding. We shall look into some of the records created in batting in Major League Baseball.
The best batting average in one season was recorded by Nap Lajoie in 1901 with an amazing .426 average. Lajoie, who was inducted in the Hall of Fame 1937, also had a .338 career batting average. The record for highest career average in the Majors is held
by Ty Cobb with .366. Ty was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1936.
The record for most hits in a season is held by Ichiro Suzuki, who hit an amazing 259 hits in 2004 season, representing the Seattle Mariners. The record previously was held by George Sisler for 84 year. He had 257 hits in 1920 season.
A single season record for the doubles is with Earl Webb who hit 67 doubles during the 1931 season for the Boston Red Sox. The same record for a career is held by Tris Speaker who had 792 doubles to his name. He retired in 1928 after 22 years in Majors.
Tris was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1937.
The record for most triples in a single season is held by Chief Wilson, who hit 36 triples in 1912. The record has been in place for exactly a century now. The record for most career triples is owned by Sam Crawford with 309. Sam retired from baseball in
1917.
Most extra base hits during a season is held by none other than the legendary Babe Ruth. During the 1921 season, Babe had 119 extra base hits. The record has held its ground even after 91 years have gone by.
The longest hitting streak record was made in 1941 when Joe DiMaggio had at least one hit in 56 consecutive games for the New York Yankees. Joe played in the Majors for 15 years and the New York Yankees was the only team he represented. DiMaggio was inducted
in the Hall of Fame in 1955.
Most base on balls in a single season was made by Barry Bonds in 2001 with 177 after the record was held by Babe Ruth for 78 years. The record for most career walks is held by R Henderson with 2190. The record was owned by Babe Ruth for 66 years with 2062
walks.
The record for most home-runs in a single season is 73 which is held by Barry Bonds, which he achieved at the age of 37. He also holds the record for the most home-runs in all of Major League with 762.
The most career runs record is held by Rickey Henderson who hit a total of 2285 career runs. The record for the most runs in a single season is with Babe Ruth with 177 that he made in 1921.
The record for most RBI’s in a single season is 191 by Hack Wilson, made in 1930. The record for career RBI’s is held by Hank Aaron, who has 2297 runs batted in.
